John got kicked out of the recorder group at the age of 8 for playing by ear instead of reading the music. He quickly decided improvisation was the way to go. He started studying clarinet before moving on to saxophone. He has played for sessions and on stage with a wide range of bands from funk, to jazz to Jim Bowen.

John first worked with the band as a session musician on Coming up for Air in August 2007 and has played with them since the Launch Gig in October of that year. He says that playing with the band is just a way to get in and listen to all of the amazing musicians in Breathing Space for free.

John’s influences include John Coltrane, Michael Brecker, Branford Marsalis and Lisa Simpson.
